In 1978 verliet Les de groep om solo te gaan. Hij nam drie nummers op: A groovy kind of love / US Style What do you want to make those eyes / Stand Still Stella I think of you / I think I’ll go that way Later volgden nog: Rock on Elvis en Don't you say it / Streetfighter	In 1978 Les left the band and went solo. He recorded 3 songs: A groovy kind of love / US Style What do you want to make those eyes / Stand Still Stella I think of you / I think I’ll go that way Later on the singles Rock on Elvis and Don’t you say it / Streetfighter followed.
Rob, Ray en Dave en Brian gingen verder met een zangeres, Margot Buchanan. Ze namen twee singles op: de eerste Drop everthing and run/Taking the easy way out en de tweede onder de naam Ring genaamd Rico/Make a buck. Rob en Ray brachten twee singles uit onder de naam Roly: Don't ever change/Yes I do en Car friends/Roly Pin.		Rob, Ray, Dave and Brian continued with Margot Buchanan on lead vocals. They recorded 2 singles. The first one was Drop everything and run/Taking the easy way out; the second one was Rico/Make a buck, recorded under the name Ring. Rob and Ray released two singles under the name Roly: Don’t ever change/Yes I do and Car friends/Roly pin.
In 1980 besloot Les terug te keren bij MUD. Op dat moment besloten Rob en Ray de groep te verlaten. Rob ging eerst bij de Darts spelen, bekend van o.a. Let's hang on en White Christmas. Ray Stiles gaat spelen bij de Hollies,waar hij nu nog steeds succesvol mee optreedt in gans Europa; zo waren ze in 2006 te zien op het oldie festival The Golden Years in België.	In 1980 Les decided to return to Mud. At the same time Rob and Ray decided to leave the band. Rob first joined The Darts, known for their songs Let’s hang on and White Christmas. Ray Stiles joined The Hollies and he still successfully tours with them throughout Europe. In 2006 they played on the oldie festival The Golden Years in Belgium.

Dus zocht Les nieuwe leden om mee verder te gaan en dat werd de Cherie Beck band, bestaande uit Stuart, Cherie, Dale en Rob. Rob werd later vervangen door Steve. Deze bezetting trad regelmatig op in de tachtiger jaren, zowel in Engeland als Nederland als Duitsland. Tegelijkertijd vertrok Les met zijn vrouw naar Portugal om zich daar definitief te vestigen. This line-up regularly toured in England, the Netherlands and Germany in the eighties. At the same time Les and his wife moved to Portugal to settle there for good.
In 1984 werd MUD weer een viermansformatie met o.a. Les en Nick, Tim en Mark. Verschillende wisselingen volgden, totdat gitarist Syd Twynham (ex Liquid Gold), John Berry (bas) en Wole ‘Wally’ Roth (drums) met Les gingen optreden. Wole, die in 1999 naar The Searchers overstapte, werd vervangen door Phil Wilson. Syd, John en Phil traden ook zonder Les op onder de naam The Escorts.	In 1984 Mud became a 4-piece band again, with Les, Nick, Tim and Mark. The changes in the line-up continued until guitar player Syd Twynham (ex Liquid Gold), John Berry (bass) and Wole ‘Wally’ Roth (drums) started playing with Les. Wole Roth left to join The Searchers in 1999 and was replaced by Phil Wilson. Syd, John en Phil also gigged without Les as The Escorts.
In deze samenstelling kwam MUD in de jaren negentig regelmatig naar Nederland, totdat Les geveld werd door keelkanker. Het laatste optreden dat Les Gray met Mud deed was op The Golden Years in Antwerpen op 7 december 2002. Hij overleed op 21 februari 2004 aan de gevolgen van een hartaanval en werd in Portugal begraven. John Berry verliet de groep en speelt momenteel bij Slade. Op 25 augustus 2004 organiseerde John ook de memorial show ter ere van Les Gray in Londen. Verschillende collega-artiesten van Mud traden hier op als eerbetoon. Dave Mount overleed op 3 December 2006 in een ziekenhuis in Londen.		In this line-up Mud regularly played in The Netherlands in the nineties, until Les was diagnosed with throat cancer. The last show he played was at the Golden Years festival in Antwerp on December 7th, 2002. He died of a heart attack on February 21st, 2004 and is buried in Portugal. John Berry left the band and joined Slade. On August 25th, 2004 John also organised the Les Gray Memorial Show in London; several fellow artists of Mud performed here to pay their tribute to Les. Dave Mount died in a hospital in London on December 3rd, 2006.
